The Physics and Chemistry of Polymers and Glasses

Professor Sindee L. Simon’s research group focuses on the physics and chemistry of polymers and glass-forming materials. Using calorimetry, dilatometry, and mechanical experiments, coupled with rigorous analysis and modeling, her research laboratory elucidates fundamental questions in three broad areas of materials physics and chemistry.

  • The kinetics and nature of the glass transition
  • Properties and reactions at the nanoscale
  • Viscoelastic bulk modulus of polymers and nanocomposites

She has performed important work testing and developing the empirical models of structural recovery, is one of the few researchers in the world to be able to measure the time-dependent bulk modulus, and has pioneered research on polymerization reaction kinetics and thermodynamics at the nanoscale.
